Here's the skinny:
- Jane's Walk Calgary is run by the Calgary Foundation. Last year there were about 20 walks. We are looking to substantially increase these numbers. Other (larger) cities host over 100 walks.
- All walks are volunteer-based, and walks do not require sign-ups and are free. This is to solidify the fact that this is a non-exclusive, community event.
- We are trying to get more young people into this event, and create a buzz. A fun way to hang out in your city for a couple hours, and learn or see things you didn't know about. So, we want creative walk ideas! Bike tours are also welcome! Your walks should be about 1-1.5 hours long (and be interesting that whole time), and have some sort of theme and an informational component (everyone learns something new).
- Some ideas we've come up with so far: a pub/food crawl, parkour walk, a music-based walk, a photography walk, a GLBTQ walk, art walk, etc.....
Why you should lead a walk:
- As an international event (9 countries, 68 cities, 400+ walks and counting!), with big name recognition (thanks, Jane Jacobs!), this will look awesome on your resumes/CVs.
- It's a great way to meet new people, and to get involved in the city you live in, and learn a little something new!
- You will be playing an important role in getting other people involved in their community, and making Calgary a tightknit city. Make Calgary an exciting place that has fun things to do!
Check out this link to get more specific ideas on walk criteria. You will also see a walk leader application form as well as a tip sheet.
All applications are due March 23, 2012, so plenty of time to get creative!
Please don't hesitate to pitch me ideas or ask any questions! And forward this on to everyone you know!
