About Michael Michael Miller, born in Glasgow, Scotland, currently lives and works in New York City. Michael has a longstanding interest in visual arts: as a teenager he attended classes at Glasgow School of Art and later became active as a photographer. From 2002 to 2004 he trained in academic drawing at the Liceo Artistico Leon Battista Alberti in Florence, Italy, and subsequently in oil painting with the Laborarte Group in the same city. He also studied acrylic techniques under the Florentine modernist Paolo Frosecchi. In 2006 Michael moved to Maputo, Mozambique, where he was heavily influenced by traditional designs, the work of local artists and, more generally, by the art and religious objects of Sub-Saharan Africa. While in Mozambique he also began to collect and experiment with natural pigments. From 2007 to 2009 Michael lived and worked in Geneva, Switzerland, where he studied sketching and academic drawing at the Fondation pour la formation des adultes à Genève while pursuing his own abstract work. Prior to moving to New York in September 2010 he spent a year working in Montenegro in the Western Balkans, where he focused in particular on landscape-inspired work. Michael is currently engaged in abstract painting at the Art Students League of New York under the instruction of Kikuo Saito and Frank O'Cain, who has a particular interest in approaches to space in abstract painting. From September 2010 to March 2012 he also studied with Larry Poons, one of America's pre-eminent abstract painters. Michael was admitted as a full member of the League in April 2011. Michael has studied at the universities of Edinburgh, Leicester and Pennsylvania and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. He has a doctorate in history and civilization from the European University Institute in Florence. You like our events?
