'Emigrés in Venice" is primarily a retrospective show of undiscovered oil-on-canvas and ink sketches by Voldemars Darznieks, a midcentury abstract expressionist working in Venice, CA. The artist lived and worked in a studio at 900 Pacific Ave from 1962 to 1982, producing dozens of paintings and a large number of ink sketches which were found in his home at the time of his death in late 2010. There are both representational works and abstract works dating from the mid-century Venice art colony that have not been seen until now. Also showing are Darzniek's fellow Latvian émigré Kaza Laurs, who still works in Venice and will be present at the opening. The show runs May 5 through May 13 at the Latvian Community Center at 1955 Riverside Drive, with the opening on Saturday, May 5 at 4:00 PM. Information 510 501 8413. Catalogue at markvc1.tumblr.com
