Issue No. 2: Wipe Out
In popular magazines such as TIME, articles are the filler and ads are the content. As Ricky Yanas—Pastelegram’s guest editor for its second print issue—sees it, the ads must be included among the magazines pages, economically speaking, and the articles do not. Therefore the magazine’s articles for the most part support the advertising companies’ sale of goods.
In his project for Pastelegram’s second issue, titled Wipe Out, Yanas is remaking TIME magazine. Yanas voids TIME’s articles and ads of meaning through erasing, doubling and reworking visual and textual elements of the magazine and its advertisements. Through such maneuvers Yanas intends to create problems. In place of TIME’s clear directives, Pastelegram No. 2’s spoof of TIME offers suggestions left uncompleted and undefined.
Wipe Out will also include a collaboration between Yanas and T.J. Hunt: “To Heap and Heap Again,” a reconsideration and reuse of famous earthworks [such as Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty (1970) or Michael Heizer’s Double Negative (1969-1970)]. As the meaning of these earthworks calcifies within the course of history, Yanas’ and Hunt’s project aims to look again at these artworks and what they might now signify.
