DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
Anne Balsamo and a team from the Annenberg Innovation Lab are coordinating the production of the DIGITAL EXPERIENCES that will be part of the upcoming commemoration of the 30th Anniversary of the Public recognition of the AIDS pandemic and the 25th Anniversary of the founding of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. We received a $50k grant but need to continue fundraising.
There are three main events happening this summer in Washington DC:
1) The Smithsonian Folklife Festival (June 27-July 8)
2) The “QUILT Throughout the Capital” (July 9-20); and
3) The QUILT display on the Mall of Washington (to be held in conjunction with the XIX International Conference on AIDS) (July 20-25)
The USC Team is collaborating with two groups of designers and technologists--one from Brown University and another from the University of Iowa--in creating three kinds of experiences designed to enhance and augment the displays of the textile QUILT:
1) an INTERACTIVE BROWSER of digitized QUILT images on a multi-touch surface table;
2) a MOBILE application that provides a DIGITAL MEMORIAL BOOK, a MAP of the location of QUILT panels in DC, and CROWDSOURCING applications to assist the archiving of the Quilt; and
3) a video-taping station for the recording of ORAL HISTORIES of people who have a relationship to the production of the QUILT (panel makers).
I am now looking for people to help with various efforts surrounding the creation of the digital experiences; some of these efforts are underway:
