We’ve seen many consumer technology products over the last decade, and watch some fade in favor of new brands while some that has been ‘replaced’ by other products , (the portable GPS being one example being “replaced” by the GPS on the mobile phone). Also intriguing is why some companies could charge $500 for a clock radio (and have delighted customers) while others struggled if their product was priced even a few dollars above a competitor. While some people have pointed to brand recognition, brand positioning or brand value as the main answer, we observed that during the past decade, one of the strongest and most loved brands, Sony, has struggled while a company left for dead 10 years ago, Apple, has risen to the top and has become the most valuable company on the planet. What did companies like Apple, Bose and Amazon (with its Kindle) do right and what did companies that fell from grace miss when it comes to technology products.
Our keynote speaker for May, Josh Weinberg who has worked with major corporations and served as consultant to many consumer technology and electronics products has fascinating insights into this important topic. Josh has several product launch credits to his resume, including launch of first line of Sony Vaio products, Playstation 3, Truveo.com (the widely acclaimed search engine) and is a frequent speaker at Wall Street Journals “All Things D” conference and can be seen often on major TV interviews on this important subkect. His insights and “deck of cards” will be a sure hit with anyone responsible for launching technology products.
