The Geek Club South Bay is celebrating its second anniversary! A grand occasion such as this deserves an equally grand event, and we organizers have been gathering at top-secret organizer meetings to plan what we believe will be a party of epic proportions.
We have paid to reserve the largest group picnic area at Lakewood Park in Sunnyvale. Our area has quite a few tables, some BBQ grills, and is nicely shaded with trees. The park has many nice features and we've got some fun activities prepared!
The cost to reserve the picnic area for our exclusive use set us back $150. Although we are not charging a price to attend this event, we would very much appreciate donations in any amount to help offset the cost :)

Here's a peek at what will be happening...
Annular Solar Eclipse
An annular eclipse occurs when the Sun and Moon are exactly in line, but the apparent size of the Moon is smaller than that of the Sun. Hence the Sun appears as a very bright ring, or annulus, surrounding the outline of the Moon.
Clearly, the universe is a fan of the Geek Club, since it arranged for this cool astronomical event to happen right around the club's anniversary, right near the club's location, and on a pleasant Sunday in the late afternoon. Thanks, universe!
The eclipse will start at 5:17pm and reach its max at 6:33pm. Although we are not located directly in the center of the eclipse path, we are very close! We'll have supplies available for everyone to make their own pinhole projector for safe eclipse viewing. Check out the official NASA page and this interesting blog post for more info on the eclipse.
Potluck and BBQ
Portable grills are not allowed in the park, but our reserved picnic area has BBQs where we can cook up some tasty eats. Food will be potluck style, so bring something to share! You can bring yums to put on the grill, or just general snacks and eats. We'll provide the disposable plates, cups, napkins and cutlery.
Eye of Sauron Piñata
Yes, you read that right. Help defend Middle-earth with gleeful violence and win candy! Why the Eye of Sauron, you ask? Well, first of all, we're geeks (duh). Also, the annular type of solar eclipse pretty much means there will be a gigantic flaming version of The One Ring in the sky.
Frisbee and Other Fun Park Things
Like to play ultimate frisbee? Dodgeball? Fly kites? Bring your stuff and come play with other geeks! The park has a volleyball sandpit, tennis courts, a skate park, big grassy fields, and even horseshoe pits...!
Geek Bingo
Bingo with a geeky theme. There will be prizes. Impress all your friends with your amazing bingo skills!
Left-Center-Right Tournament
Feeling lucky? Win an awesome prize if you can end up victorious in this simple game.
Board Games
Because, how can we not have board games? Seriously.
Big Group and Improv Games
Large group games will be run by the amazing supergeeks Ping, Hank, and Jonathan! And fun will be had by all.
Geek Craft Table
Feeling creative? Make and personalize your Solar Eclipse Pinhole Projector here. You can also create and decorate an exciting rocket ship toy! Take these home afterward to keep as lovely mementos.

The party's exact location will be where the John W Christian Greenbelt crosses Silverlake Drive. It probably won't be hard to find us, but if you can't then call or text Alanna at 971-645-9449.
Parking may be a bit tough, so be prepared to potentially walk a few blocks.
Hope to see you there!
