TARRUS RILEY's foray into music was inevitable. The talented singer and songwriter was always surrounded by music from an early age. His father is veteran reggae singer Jimmy Riley. The secret to his success is quite simple when preparation meets opportunity, stated a self-assured Riley. I sing for the people - this is the contribution I can make and after I make a song; it isnt even mine anymore; it belongs to the people.
Known for his healing music, Tarrus released his sophomore album Parables in 2006 to widespread acclaim and spawned hit singles - Stay With You, Beware, Shes Royal, Lion Paw, among others. I worked on Parables with Dean Fraser and I wasnt surprised at the success it has had, but how fast it all happened, Riley reflected. Early 2011 saw the release of the Black History themed Shaka Zulu Pickney which was featured on the Nyabingi rhythm from Bombrush Music. His interest in educating the youth about Black History resulted in the Tarrus Riley Freedom Writers Competition, which ran on Jamaicas Irie FM radio station.
LOS RAKAS represent pan-American flows. Two cousins who grew up in Panama before spending their teens in Oakland, California, Raka Dun and Raka Rich put a distinctive "Panabay" twist on hip-hop and reggae, bridging the streetwise sounds of the places they've called home. Drawing on Panamanian plena's faithful approach to reggae classics and the Bay Area's independent and idiosyncratic hip-hopscene, Los Rakas merge familiar dancehall melodies with a lyricism all their own.
Critically acclaimed and blog favorites, Los Rakas keep on top of their game by releasing a steady stream of tracks, remixes, mixtapes, and videos (which have exceeded over 500,000+ views), and expanding their circleof collaborators to include the Austrian aggro-dancehall of Stereotyp, to the Bay Area mainstays like E-40 and Zion I & The Grouch, to the electro-tropidelica of New York City's Uproot Andy.
COMMON KINGS produce phenomenal pop hits with rock, reggae, R&B and classic soul influences. The Kings individual musical journeys were inspired by artists like Musiq Soulchild, Raphael Saadiq, D'Angelo, Van Morrison, Stevie Wonder, George Benson, Jim Croce, Michael Jackson, and many traditional artists from the islands. The band’s resulting original sound is a collection of these varied musical and cultural inspirations orchestrated into an array of head-rocking beats, feel-good rhythms, and emotional fervor.
Their fun-loving attitude and "good vibes" high energy projects loud and clear during Common Kings’ live performance experience. With lead-singer Sasualei “JR King” Maliga in the forefront, Common Kings possesses one of the most naturally gifted and powerfully impressive singers in the game today. Graced with a distinctive, raw, organic talent, JR’s vocal ability appears boundless as he amazes listeners with his welcoming tone, wide range of rich notes, infectious melodies, and soulful passion.
