Featuring: TONGO

Tongo dedicates his craft to creating liberated territory when he performs or teaches. He has performed and led workshops in many of the country's centers of detention and spoken word venues from coast-to-coast. At the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, Tongo produced a monthly show that featured survivors of the prison industrial complex that now incarcerates two million Black and Brown people. He is a founding member of Black Fire and has published in the journal Roots and Culture. Tongo won the 2005 Zora Neale Hurston Award for Excellence in Humanities Writing and is a member of the 2011 San Francisco slam team.
