Coinciding with the final weeks of the exhibition, The Cult of Beauty: The Victorian Avant-Garde 1860-1900, currently on view at the Legion of Honor, Extravagance and Industry explores San Francisco's rich Victorian past. We invite you to learn more about the historical context of the rebellious aesthetic movement of the mid-19th century and consider the presence of its impressive relics in our lives today.
Characterized as an era of corruption, rapid industrialization, and uneven prosperity, the Victorian Era changed the face of Western culture. Concurrently, the British Aesthetic Movement with its progressive approach to design has had a lasting impact upon present-day notions of beauty. Caught up with the excitement of new technologies, Victorian artists, designers and architects sought to create innovative (and oftentimes lavish) surroundings for the flourishing middle class. The Haas-Lilienthal House, a Queen Anne-style Victorian constructed in 1886, serves as the perfect backdrop for our panel discussion examining the extraordinary cultural heritage of San Francisco.
