In the 1980s, a tax was created to collect revenue from exercise classes. Recently, the state has reinterpreted this tax to apply to any room/event wherein attendees may dance, including live music venues. In response, several members of the music community are fighting back by holding a concert to raise money for these music and arts venues in their legal battle against the tax, WAC 458-20-183. Under this application of the tax, local venues are facing years' worth of enormous back taxes (hundreds of thousands of dollars, in some cases), which they cannot possibly afford to pay.
Proceeds from this evening will go toward the legal fees needed to fight this tax. The May 26th show will feature great music from local artists in both Columbia City Theater and in the lobby Bourbon Bar, as well as a raffle with prizes from local venues, businesses, and artists. Highlights from the raffle include a pair of tickets to Lemolo's sold out June 29th CD release show and an autographed Kris Orlowski CD
