Who gives a crap about your silly social app, you won't win the Nobel for that! Calling all "hard science/engineering" entrepreneurs, it is time to build the infrastructure for the next scientific revolution: Big Data, Future of Peer Review, Data Viz, Software + Hardware systems for Science! StartUp Science is an event, business plan competition, innovation challenge series, and mentorship network designed to catalyze the formation of teams, projects, and companies focused on positively transforming the infrastructure of modern science. This initiative will support the emergence of a new type of “science entrepreneur” combining perspectives from the worlds of research, technology, and engineering, to build novel solutions to difficult problems and bottlenecks affecting contemporary research. Traditionally, efforts to encourage entrepreneurship in science have focused on established categories such as medical devices, therapeutics, diagnostics, and, most recently, digital health. In contrast, StartUp Science is dedicated to strategic platforms and applications dealing with what could be best thought of as “Meta-Science Tools,” disruptive technologies and approaches which will make the entire innovation system function more effectively for all stakeholders. The scope includes interrelated meta-categories such as Big Data, (especially bioinformatics and infrastructure for next generation sequencing), Data Visualization, Reproducibility of Research, and Scientific Attribution/Reputation/Accreditation.
