Drawn from the Greek classics, the story of Idomeneo takes place in the aftermath of the Trojan War. Idamante, son of warrior-king Idomeneo, is a beloved new leader in his father’s absence. To save himself and his crew from a storm at sea, Idomeneo offers the gods a terrible sacrifice. Unable to go through with his promise, the gods threaten to destroy his people, leaving Idomeneo faced with an unthinkable dilemma. Playwright Charlotte Stoudt’s English transformation and update of the original libretto emphasizes both the universality and the timeless parallels between the Greek classics at the heart of the Idomeneo story and contemporary life, as well as the profound humanity of Mozart’s music.
