Matt is currently the Executive Director of the UC Student Association, where he works directly for the 200,000 students in the UC system, helping to ensure the affordability and accessibility of public higher education in California. He is the founder and chair of Citizen Hope, a Bay Area organization which encourages civic engagement and community service, where he has spearheaded over 50 events and initiatives that directly benefit kids and families in San Francisco.
Matt has a JD from Stanford Law, a MA in Education from Stanford School of Education, a BA from UC Berkeley, and an LLM in Human Rights from the National University of Ireland Galway. He is a Humanity in Action Senior Fellow, New Leaders Council Fellow, a former Greenlining Summer Associate, former California State Senate Fellow, and a former Senator George Mitchell Scholar.
Matt is a former Legislative Aide and education policy staffer for State Senator Joe Simitian, former New Mexico Youth Vote Director for Obama for America, and former White House Intern in the Office of the White House Counsel. He has been an educator and an active school volunteer, and served on the SFUSD Public Education Enrichment Fund Advisory Committee, Restorative Justice Taskforce, and Attorney General Kamala Harris’ Education and Truancy transition team.
Matt’s priorities include innovative approaches to securing new resources and partnerships, advocating for an engaging standards-based curriculum that ensures college and career readiness for all and closes the achievement gap, supporting and expanding community schools, and enhancing student input in decision making.
