Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche (1939-1987), who escaped to the West during the 1959 Tibetan uprising, became known for behavior not usually associated with Buddhist mastery: renouncing his monastic vows, drinking openly and heavily, eloping with a 16-year-old, and sleeping with numerous disciples.
Yet the same man also founded the Western Buddhist institutions Naropa University and Shambhala Training, inspired the likes of Pema Chodron and Allen Ginsberg, and wrote books of teachings whose copies have sold in the millions.
Johanna Demetrakas' documentary "Crazy Wisdom" -- whose title refers to the lama's unorthodox approach -- explores the controversies, paradoxes and lasting influence that define Trungpa's legacy.
