You’re invited to be a part of the first ever global floating dance party. On 07/07 the whole world will participate in a unique sharing experience where people all over the planet will dance for a whole day.
At the local level, the party consists of a roving group that grooves through public spaces, listening on mp3 players to one playlist in synchrony, dancing and celebrating the space, the music, and each other. We imagine this happening wrapping around the world over 24 hours, uniting dozens of local parties and untold numbers of people for one night each year.
As the dance wraps up in Tokyo, others – who have been following the photos, videos, and tweets being posted online – pick it up in Hong Kong. Through Melbourne, Dubai, and Johannesberg, perhaps, we go! The dance leaps westward: to Copenhagen, Accra, London, Buenos Aires, New York, Chicago, Boulder, San Francisco ... Owned by the members, the event can belong to anyone who wants to start their own float to join the global passage.
We tend to listen to music either in loud, public spaces where we are tethered to the stage, or in headphones, where we lose music’s best consequence, sharing. Hypothetically the growing availability and shrinking price of mobile devices should make sharing music easier than ever. In practice, these gadgets do more to isolate than they do to unite. We aim to unite: through dance and a playlist drawn from music of every participating nation.
This project is inspired by many different threads of work in the yarn-ball of projects aimed at creating public self-awareness through art. In particular, we model ourselves after the One Day On Earth project, Improv Everywhere, and mobile apps like RjDj that link music and environment.
