Co-produced with CounterPULSE through the Summer Special program, Bianca Cabrera's Blind Tiger Society will be presenting Sunk in Sleep, a dance set in the liminal space between dreaming and waking. Evocative sets, detailed costuming and transformative makeup lend an eerie and mystical look into the wandering mind at rest. Thick with anthropomorphic metaphor and rich with image, Sunk in Sleep vacillates between narrative storylines and kinetic sensationalism. Unadulterated physical vocabulary matched with unpredictable partnering creates an atmosphere of adventure while leaving the audience with a resonant experience of peril and delight. Sunk in Sleep happens on, around and near the stage, making the entire theater the environment for play. Audience members can expect the dance to wander through meaning, meander through symbol and blur the distinction between truths and fantasy. Part daydream, part nightmare, Sunk in Sleep is a down the rabbit hole kind of exploit, taking you straight into the belly of your own beast.
“Audience will engage with the performance through witnessing, watching, tasting, feeling, touching and listening,” says Bianca Cabrera, Artistic Director of Blind Tiger Society. “Those who crave adventure, intimacy, risk and pleasure will take full advantage of the night. Only when you leave the physical space will the show be over. This sets up an engaged environment in which you can choose your own level adventure and participate as much or as little as you please.”
Sunk in Sleep boasts a brand new cast and marks the beginning collaboration between choreographer Bianca Cabrera and musician/composer Ben Joudvalkis and the continuation of Cabrera’s collaboration with artist, Roel Q Seeber. Cabrera and Seeber have been collaborators since 2009, first working together in Boulder, CO.
