In the next few years, agreements with Xcel Energy and Center Point will expire, and some Minneapolis residents say now is the time to push for local utility ownership.
At Breakfast with Gary this Friday, June 29th, hear from members of the Minneapolis Energy Options Coalition who will talk about the possibilities of expanding energy options. Rather than enter into another 20 year relationship with these utilities, advocates argue the city can explore a number of options, including become its own utility, negotiating for stable rates, improving energy reliability, finding more renewable energy sourcing, reducing dependency on “dirty energy”, and create a system for greater community ownership and control.
Speakers will include Environment Minnesota Director Ken Bradley, Cooperative Energy Futures and Our Power Board Chair Timothy DenHerder-Thomas, and Environmental Justice Advocates Community Organizer Louis Alemayehu. Breakfast with Gary is a monthly meeting held from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m. the final Friday of the month at the Mercado Central, 1515 East Lake Street. There is no charge to attend. $5 buys breakfast.
