Charlie came up with the concept of âLean as a pattern languageâ and we've decided to make it the focus of the Lean meetup. This gives the group a purpose and a focus. Every meeting we will discuss as many patterns as we can for Lean; ultimately this could give rise to a web site or published book.
A pattern language is simply a structured way of describing something systematically. It was first invented for us in architecture to cut through the flowery language of architects and describe what makes spaces and places âgoodâ.

What's a Pattern?
A pattern is simply a common element that occurs repeatedly in a particular context. For example a pattern in architecture might be âa place to waitâ (e.g. bus stops; doctors rooms; etc). In Lean a pattern might be âsingle piece flowâ or âSMEDâ or âelimination of wasteâ.

What's a Pattern Language?
A pattern Language is a consistent way of describing patterns.
It is a collection of patterns, each described in the same way and linked together. Each pattern indicates how to use it, what problems it can solve and what other patterns it could be linked to. In this way people can build a map of patterns to solve actual problems.
