The biggest, best Edinburgh Mela yet: so big, in fact, we had to create a whole extra stage for it!
DANCE: Hip hop, parkour and contemporary dance rub shoulders with classical Indian Kuchipudi, film/dance collaborations, Nepalese folk dance and traditional movement from all over the world on our brand new stage, the Mela World Dance Feste. Look out for some great new commissions by Scottish artists, and some exclusive international performances.
MUSIC: The Stranger Family (Ramee, Tasha Tah & Char Avell), and the team behind huge summer hits OMG and Has Has (Surinder Ratan, Metz & Trix and Joga Singh) are all coming, as are Jassi Sidhu, Gubi Sandhu, Eylem & SK1.
If Bhangra and desi aren't your thing, might we suggest the gorgeous sounds of Soumik Datta (the sarod virtuoso whose collaborators include Beyonce, Nitin Sawhney and Bill Bailey)? And make sure you catch our headliners, NYC 9-piece dhol/funk/brass act Red Baraat.
We've got a whole range of world music from flamenco-tipped sufi to Ghanian drumming. If you're not sure what you like yet, check out the Mela Mix Stage, hosted by G-Town Desi: African choirs, bagpipe dhol and some wicked urban beats, as well as a farewell DJ set with live hip hop by legendary producer Joseph Malik.
FASHION: Well, it wouldn't be the Edinburgh Mela without our world-famous catwalk show, would it?
FOOD: The Global Food Village is open for your delectation!
FAMILY FUN: Workshops, children's theatre, and our new Storytelling Ship in the Mela Kidzone.
FREE EVENING SHOW: FRIDAY 31 AUGUST, 8.30pm
This year, we're opening the Mela with a bang - or several. Outdoor theatre specialists Walk the Plank and Edinburgh's own Dance Ihayami are staging a spectacular retelling of the story of Rama & Sita, with pyrotechnics, dance and fire animation. The show is free to all comers.
OPENING HOURS: Saturday 1 - Sunday 2 September, 12-9pm. £3 day pass entry (under 12s free).
