‘Oliver Fannie’ takes a light hearted look at sexuality, repression and prostitution in this round-the-world musical escapade.
Fannie (Karly Palmer) is a young girl who is not happy being trapped at home by her controlling Victorian mother (Connie Cahoots). Driven by her sense of adventure, she runs away and before long finds herself on Sleazy Street where her big heart gets her in big trouble. Forced to flee the city with her new dog-boy companion (Tranny Zukko) she stows away aboard a ship and begins an erotic and comedic journey that will take her around the world as she discovers the seedy sides of Bangkok, Constantinople and Paris before a shocking return home.
Inspired by the original theatrical burlesque productions of the late 1800’s, Oliver Fanny features a combination of witty satire and lowbrow humour that presents sexuality in a way that is positive and disarmingly funny. The seventeen member cast performs fourteen song and dance parodies of ‘Oliver’ and ‘Annie’ including: Ohh La La; Hard Cock Life; Boobs Glorious Boobs; and You’ve Got to Use a Finger or Two. Fannie is the fourth theatrical feature penned by Screaming Chicken’s Artistic Director and world renowned performer Melody Mangler whose ‘Terror at Rock Out Beach’ (2011), ‘Greece Does Grease’ (2010) and ‘Sex, Violence and Nursery Rhymes’ (2006) have all received critical recognition.
Screaming Chicken Theatrical Society is a non-profit, amateur company dedicated to developing and presenting the art of burlesque. Now in its 9th year of producing shows the Chicken’s have presented almost 200 performances and grown to become the world’s largest burlesque troupe. The group has played a major role in developing the now booming Vancouver burlesque community by introducing over 200 performers to the stage, co-founding the hugely popular Vancouver International Burlesque Festival and promoting diversity and innovation in the art.
The Chickens have also received international recognition and have twice been invited to compete for the title of ‘Best Group’ (2010, 2012) at the Burlesque Hall of Fame’s Tournament of Tease in Las Vegas. Screaming Chicken’s members have performed around the world and won a number of local, national and international awards including two from the Burlesque Hall of Fame (only four have ever been won by Canadians). Screaming Chicken have also won numerous awards including 'Most Trailblazing Dance or Theatre Company' in the Terminal City Vanguard Awards and 'Best Local Theatre Company' in the Westender's Best of the City. Screaming Chicken believes in presenting humour and sexuality in a way that is inclusive, entertaining and joyful traits that shine trough in Oliver Fannie.
