Tribeca Film has invited us to opening night of "Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai," the 83rd directorial effort by Takashi Miike ("13 Assassins," "Audition").
This revisionist jidaigeki, which played in competition at Cannes 2011, attacks the samurai myth in homage to Masaki Kobayashi's "Harakiri" (1962). Presented in 2D.
All Red Lantern members and their guests are eligible for discount admission ($8 plus PayPal service fees, payable at the time of RSVP) and free entry into a raffle drawing for tie-in prizes, including the forthcoming DVD (to be released winter 2012-2013). Prepurchased admission and refunds close at noon on Monday, Aug. 13.
Synopsis: When a destitute samurai arrives at a feudal lord's home requesting permission to commit seppuku (ritual suicide), the disbelieving house council regales him with the story of another recent visitor: a young ronin who attempted a "suicide bluff" and met a grisly end as a result. But this samurai bears hidden motives of his own, with consequences that could devastate all involved.

"Remarkably sensitive and moving. ... (Miike's) fidelity to an older filmmaking style brings out the beauty of the story, and his restraint makes 'Hara-Kiri' a credible critique of violence rather than an exploitation of its horror." -- A.O. Scott, The New York Times
"A formally elegant, dramatically faithful retelling of Masaki Kobayashi's 1962 black-and-white classic... Miike's mournful variation on traditional samurai-movie themes of honor, sacrifice and retribution offers its own rewards" -- Justin Chang, Variety
"Superbly acted ... has the lineaments of a classic" -- Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
