The legendary Mix Master Mike
by Luke Fox
A San Francisco native, Mix Master Mike sliced his way into the vinyl scene 20 years ago when his wrist skills won him the ’92 DJ Battle for World Supremacy, and he’s devoted the last two decades living up to such a lofty Pinky and the Brain-style title. In addition to touring as the one DJ to the Beastie Boys’ legendary three MCs and founding the scratch-happy Invisibl Skratch Piklz DJ collective with Q-Bert,
Mix Master Mike has reaped accolades for his five solo albums and contributions to three Beastie Boys LPs. A secret unlockable character in the 2002 snowboard video game SSX Tricky, his connection to action sports goes way back. In support of his signature headphones, Mike headlined a Skullcandy SIA bash with Snoop Dogg and tore up the Winter X Games with Del tha Funkee Homosapien in 2010. He then
dropped jaws at the 2011 Canadian Open Freeskiing Championship. Last year the pioneer hit the stage with Travis Barker on Lil Wayne’s I Am Music Tour. One of the most influential turntable artists to ever live, Mike recently dedicated his must-see Serato Icon set to his recently deceased friend, Beastie Boy MCA. “My purpose here on Earth is to express myself through my music,” says the man who speaks with his
hands.
Once a crucial component of The Roots crew, beatbox wizard Rahzel has toured the world as a solo artist and collaborated with everyone from Rakim to Ben Harper to Ol’ Dirty Bastard. The Godfather of Noyze has the ability to sing and create intricate beats simultaneously, using only his face. In addition to his two solo LPs and performances at the World Ski and Snowboard Festival, the New Yorker has lent his voice to video games SSX and SSX Tricky.
True school to the core, DJ JS-1 is a graffiti artist, producer and beatmaker whose albums have featured Common, KRS-One, RZA plus members of Dilated Peoples and Hieroglyphics. Initiated into the world-famous Rock Steady Crew, JS-1 has bridged the hip-hop and action sports worlds by appearing on Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground soundtrack and performing at WSSF.
iF3 presents Mix Master Mike on Friday September 14th at 10pm @ L’Olympia, 1004 Rue Sainte-Catherine Est
Montréal
