Spalding, a Portland native, will be joined by jazz divas Linda Hornbuckle, Janice Scroggins and Hailey Niswanger, and accompanied by Thara Memory's American Music Program Jazz Orchestra. Spalding, a childhood student of Memory's, won the Grammy for Best New Artist in 2011 and graced the cover of "Downbeat" magazine in May 2012. Niswanger, a rising star who was showcased in the June 2012 issue of "Downbeat", also studied under Memory. Numerous well known Portland musicians, including Farnell Newton, Renato Caranto, Stan Bock, Ben McDonald, Dan Brewster, Israel Annoh, Ben Jones and Peter Piazza complete the star studded program.
The concert, a fundraiser for Memory's national award winning jazz education program, showcases creative arrangements of cuts from Spalding's new "Radio Music Society" CD, and an eclectic mix of jazz and blues standards. Major sponsors include KMHD Jazz Radio, PDX Jazz, Jazz Society of Oregon, Oregon Music News and Jimmy Maks. This celebration of jazz artistry takes place at Portland's Gerding Theater at the Armory.
