May 22, 2010 will be the FIRST OFFICIAL day of recognition for Harvey Milk
In September, Equality California sponsored a bill and delivered a petition signed by nearly 40,000 Californians urging the governor to sign the bill which would make May 22 Harvey Milk Day (which was his birthday). The governor has signed it and it went into effect on January 1st.
Though this is a California state day of recognition, the world is invited to celebrate Harvey Milk's life and his effect on the LGBT rights movement.

Milk was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. Later in Milk’s life, he became a gay rights activist. In 1978, Milk was assassinated. He was considered “a martyr for gay rights”, and was called “the most famous and most significantly open LGBT official ever elected in the United States.”
